Penguin Phone Home: How Linux Servers Can Update Themselves and Send Emails
Wednesday June 11, 2025 1:15pm - 2:15pm MDT
Manually checking for server software updates is tedious, but it's even worse when something goes wrong and you find out about it from angry users! Come learn how to configure "unattended-upgrades" on your Linux servers and how to give them the ability to send emails (you'll be grateful you did!).  It's quite a milestone when children learn to talk and an even bigger one when they are finally potty-trained! A server that can't update itself or notify you when something happens (or when there's a problem) is like a little baby (lots of work!). In this presentation you will learn how to:
  1. Install and configure "unattended-upgrades" (including scheduling automatic reboots for updates that require them).
  2. Install and configure "msmtp" (an SMTP client) to give your servers the ability to send emails.
  3. How to configure "crontab" to run scheduled tasks, for example:
  • If a scheduled process has an error, email me about it.
  • Scripts to email me if a certain process has crashed or if a filesystem volume is almost full.

What Happened to IPv6
Wednesday June 11, 2025 2:30pm - 3:30pm MDT
Presentation on Salt Lake School District's journey in deploying IPv6
This presentation will show benefits of IPv6 and why our district is interested in deploying it. It will go over all of our efforts of planning and deploying IPv6 and the lessons we have learned thus far. Our deployment is not completed, we still think that we are 5 or 6 years out before we will be fully deployed. We'll discuss how far wide IPv6 has been deployed, business use cases, creating an IPv6 addressing plan, creating deployment standards, security needed for IPv6, and how to deploy in phases so you don't break your environment.

Moving beyond the CLI - Catalyst Monitoring and Management
Wednesday June 11, 2025 3:45pm - 4:45pm MDT
Looking for a replacement to Prime? Cloud-Monitored Catalyst switches seamlessly integrate Cisco's trusted hardware reliability and superior performance with the streamlined convenience and strategic efficiency of cloud-based management. This potent combination yields a robust solution that simplifies network administration while adeptly addressing contemporary networking demands. Experience the intuitive control and comprehensive monitoring capabilities firsthand with Catalyst in the Dashboard. Engage with a curated series of tasks designed to showcase the Dashboard's versatility and strength in both Monitored and Managed modes, providing a practical understanding of how it empowers network operations.

We'll setup a lab to allow customers hands on experience with monitoring Catalyst devices in the Dashboard. They'll need access to the internet and a laptop. We'll provide the lab gear via a vpn tunnel. We've gamified the lab through a Capture the Flag event and will run it that way.

May the Source Be With You! How to Set Up and Use a Linux Git Server
Thursday June 12, 2025 8:30am - 9:30am MDT
Git is a really useful tool (with benefits including change tracking, well-organized collaboration, and automatic backups), but maybe you're nervous about hosting your code using a commercial source code management service. Come see how easy it is to set up a private Git server (fewer steps than you might think)!  Having even one character out of place in the code of a script, query, or program can cause it to not run, so little changes can be really important, but having to create and name a backup, and then copy it to a server every time you make a change can become a burden! Do you have information in your code that shouldn't be shared outside of your organization? The major commercial source code management services all have a free private repository option, but if your code is hosted somewhere else (offsite, and ultimately outside of your control), so there's a certain peace of mind that comes from having your own, local, private Git server, and setting one up is actually very easy--come find out how!

Optimize Learning and Teaching by Assuring Digital Experiences across Any Network
Thursday June 12, 2025 1:15pm - 1:45pm MDT
Network assurance is designed to enable School Districts and Universities with the ability to assure digital experiences over any network—whether they own the network or not. By understanding the full context of experience and its underlying factors, organizations are empowered to actively and continuously manage service outcomes for students, teachers/employees, and critical IT infrastructure. Network assurance focuses on the end-to-end “network” of interconnected private environments, service providers, and services that form a user’s experience of an application or service—from Internet service providers (ISPs), public cloud, SaaS, and more. It provides a holistic view of digital experience by showing each connected element, such as a router, DNS resolver, or web server, and its impact in relation to other elements and performance as a whole.

In this presentation we will demonstrate how to assure digital experience over any network by providing deep visibility and comprehension of the end-to-end digital supply chain. Show how to: 1-Reduce complexity and time required to address performance degradations and outages 2-Improve efficiency and overcome business silos through collaboration 3-De-risk of digital transformation initiatives, protecting business continuity, and accelerating business agility 4-Gain visibility into SaaS, ISP, Cloud, Collab Apps for in-person and remote learning/teaching. 5-Identify issues happening in the student/teacher/employee’s environment, even if they are intermittent 6-Proactively monitor and visualize the path between your users and the applications 7-Monitor integrations with other applications through APIs
