Keynote Address: Command Line Culture
Wednesday June 11, 2025 10:50am - 11:50am MDT
“Command Line Culture” explores how leadership behaviors define and propagate team culture—just like a root command shapes system behavior. Drawing from 25 years in IT, Jeremy Cox reveals how leaders can intentionally set, scale, and sustain positive culture through authenticity, empathy, and ethical example.

In tech, the right command can change everything—and the same goes for leadership. In Command Line Culture, Jeremy Cox unpacks the concept of “leadership contagion,” showing how a leader’s mindset and behavior ripple through an organization to define its culture. Drawing on 25 years of experience in IT from both sides of the team, Jeremy illustrates how intentional leadership in IT can inspire innovation, psychological safety, collaboration, and accountability. Through personal stories, actionable insights, and a systems-thinking approach, this talk challenges leaders to treat culture not as an afterthought, but as critical infrastructure—engineered, tested, and deployed from the top down.

Wednesday June 11, 2025 1:15pm - 2:15pm MDT
A technical review of recent updates to wireless standards focusing on WiFi-6e and WiFi-7. RF design guidelines, troubleshooting tools and looking toward to the future – WiFi-8.

Ideal wireless design runs counter to our cave-person brains. More power is not the solution for wireless unless both participants, AP and device, can be more powerful. This leads to a frustrating tenet of wireless networks - the client device, not the enterprise network, determines the location and defines the relationship. This presentation will go into making the enterprise network more appealing to devices and delve into how to influence the relationship to deliver more robust and stable wireless networking. The presentation starts with general wireless terminology and then moves on to power and signal considerations. With better design addressed, trouble-shooting tools that have been successful in the field will be introduced. Throughout the presentation references to the new Wi-Fi 7 standard and the design goals of the Wi-Fi 8 consortium will be included. Of course, wireless presentation would be complete without some form of a bakeoff? A challenge will be extended to the audience to keep them engaged.

Cybersecurity Best Practices for School Safety
Wednesday June 11, 2025 2:30pm - 3:30pm MDT
Cybersecurity isn't a one-size-fits-all solution; it's a mindset that must be integrated into every aspect of our digital environments. As school IT environments grow more complex, so do the potential threat vectors, which means protecting them requires a multi-faceted approach. Specifically, when it comes to school safety on digital systems, there are key considerations that can be applied to minimize threats.

Recent reports of breaches in the media have accelerated the importance of cybersecurity best practices. One such breach involved a company that provides services to public schools, where hackers gained access through the company’s support portal using valid credentials. These hackers were able to retrieve "all" historical student and teacher data stored in multiple school districts student information systems. The breach was attributed to the company's failure to implement a basic multi-factor authentication security measures on the affected system. Other reported breaches in other state school districts would have required a different protective measure. In one instance, unauthorized actors gained access to specific computer systems and obtained stored data files. A more effective protection method in this case would have been the implementation of an Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) solution, which proactively monitors laptops and devices around the clock These are just two examples of different approaches to cybersecurity. There are 4 main elements to consider when protecting digital data. 1. Individual users. In this case, students, staff members and parents. That includes the user and their devices. 2. Systems that are built and controlled by our schools. These are generally managed by the school’s IT teams. 3. Supply chain and the systems that are provided by vendors. These can be cloud and SaaS type technology services. 4. Finally, the network connection that provides the pathway accessing either type of system that connects the users to these applications must be protected.

You Should be Using and Authorization Engine
Thursday June 12, 2025 8:30am - 9:30am MDT
Static roles and hardcoded permissions don’t meet the needs of modern education systems. This session explores how authorization engines enable dynamic, policy-based access control—improving security, flexibility, and scalability across diverse user contexts.

Access control in educational environments is more complex than ever—students, faculty, staff, and systems all interact with sensitive resources under shifting contexts and roles. Traditional models based on static roles and baked-in permissions struggle to keep up. This presentation makes the case for using an authorization engine—a dynamic, policy-based system that externalizes access decisions from your application logic. We’ll focus on Cedar, an open-source language and engine developed by AWS, designed to express fine-grained, context-aware authorization policies. Yes, your LMS comes with its own access controls—but what about the rest of your ecosystem? Authorization engines excel at unifying access policies across diverse systems, APIs, and services, ensuring consistent, auditable, and adaptable permissions. Through real-world examples and live policy demonstrations, we’ll explore how policy-based access control helps IT systems become more secure, scalable, and future-ready.

Utah FORGE: Enhanced geothermal research
Thursday June 12, 2025 9:45am - 10:45am MDT
Research, education and networking at the FORGE Geothermal site near Milford, Utah. Network challenges in a remote but growing outdoor laboratory. Research into enhanced geothermal energy techniques and induced seismicity in Utah's renewable energy corridor.

Geothermal energy is often restricted to areas with underground heat, water and electrical transmission. Heat can always be found, but often the depth restricts how useful geothermal energy is. Enhanced geothermal targets areas that might otherwise be rejected. But, the gotcha is that injecting fluids into wells can often result in seismic activity. The University of Utah Seismograph Stations(UUSS) is part of the FORGE project, focused on monitoring seismic activity caused by enhanced geothermal. UUSS operates a network of instruments in and around the FORGE site. When the project was initially started, this was a radio-quiet zone (relatively speaking). As the project grows and matures, we've seen the radio noise floor increase and other problems crop up that interfere with telemetry. This presentation will focus on some of the technical networking aspects, including partnerships with UETN and Beaver County School District and the STEM-related outreach for the Utah FORGE project.

A Low Cost Way to Thwart Cyber Attacks
Thursday June 12, 2025 9:45am - 10:45am MDT
Finding a budget for CyberSecurity can be hard. Leverage your prior CAPEX expenditures to gather AI training data and uncover your adversary with cheap honeypots.

In this lab we cover some honeypot research conducted at UVU which leveraged old hardware, unused ports, and open source software to create a low-stakes honeypot designed to reveal threat actors. Turn the tables while spending little. Gather AI training data about the latest attempts on your network. In this presentation, I will cover our cybersecurity research deployment in the UVU data center, which can be easily replicated in your environment. We discuss ways to fund such a project for next to nothing. We also talk about the tissue paradigm for this type of project that leverages existing equipment and free software, "If the software breaks or the hardware fails, so what?" I share data on attacks and how that can be converted into valuable intelligence for your production network. I also discuss how you can gather information that is useful to AI. Lastly, we talk about getting your entire site blacklisted by hackers so they don't even bother messing with your network. At the end, we will answer audience questions and explore custom use case scenarios, including scenarios that may benefit you if your firewall is managed by others or if you only have internal resources and need effective trip-wires.
